Notes

Minato International Association (MIA) holds a bi-monthly film screening and group discussion event called “Minato TABUNKA Cine-Talk.” Under the concept of “Nurturing an Intercultural Community Through Film,” we screen works that offer diverse global perspectives.

This session’s feature is the thought-provoking documentary Mottainai Kitchen, which explores themes of
food and the environment, encouraging us to reflect on how we live.

In response to the shocking fact that one-third of the food produced globally is wasted, food rescuer and
filmmaker David Gross travels from Austria to Japan. His mission? To rediscover the Japanese spirit of
“mottainai” (a deep sense of regret over waste) and breathe new life into ingredients that would otherwise
be discarded. As he journeys from Fukushima to Kagoshima, he uncovers clever ways to reduce food
waste and highlights the warmth of human connections along the way.

This film asks essential questions: What does it mean to treat food not as a commodity, but as life? What
is true abundance in a world that prioritizes convenience and efficiency?

After the screening, we’ll have time for open discussion—share your thoughts on the film and explore what
we can do in our own daily lives. We hope you’ll join us!

*The film features audio in Japanese, English, and more. Japanese subtitles will be provided.

In cooperation with: Department of Child Development and Education, Faculty of Psychology, Meiji Gakuin University

Notes

In Japan public schools start in April, and at that time most cherry trees are in blossom. The local Education Board and the schools have sent you some letters with various information so far. Have you already read any of them? Do you have any questions? The Japanese school system differs from your countries’; therefore, you might have some questions or concerns about what you need to know and do now.
We are hosting a few small gatherings to go through “the Guidance for Those Thinking about Enrolling in Minato City Municipal Elementary Schools” * together: we can answer any questions you have, and give you some suggestions and advice so that you will be able to understand the Japanese school system better and prepare for the school year.
12 gatherings are scheduled for the following dates and times, and three languages are provided: English, easy Japanese and Chinese. When you are available, please come to join us.
